Technical Module Review Part III
Promotional design for a Swiss company, Mettler Toledo! |
Mettler Toledo have conquered 3 days session with BeST participants in covering bio-instrumentation course for technical module. So how Mettler Toledo helped us in biotechnology??? The products have been offered by them such as chemical reactor, automatic titrator, automatic lab reactor, real time analytics, one-click water determination, portable densito and refracto, etc. Wah, seems like they are kept removing all those manual procedures right? An auto-titration may take longer period to finish but more accurate compared to manual titration. One-click water determination has came together with secure PC software (LabX) and GLP compliance. Liquid Physics Excellence is a unique concepts for the quality control of liquids. Easymax (automated lab reactor) is a window to your chemistry in research and development for small scale production. The real time analytics such as FBRM (focused beam reflectance measurement), PVM (particle video microscope), and ReactIR-In situ Mid- FTIR (monitoring bilological reactions). Combined pH electrode and conductivity sensors with various membranes and sensors are also offered by them. Last but not least is a RAININ LTS (Pipet-Lite) as well as RFID (manual of RAININ) which are the pipettes produced by Mettler Toledo. Moreover, we are briefly explained about pH and conductivity measurements, good pipetting technique, weighing applications, online measurement, process plant controls and production weighing technology. Thanks a lot for a new info since I am more familiar with Eppendorf before.

Technical Module Review Part II
Frankly speaking, too much classroom sessions were really like my university time. Huh, those days are bored enough but still my friends and I managed to cope with. The content somehow have helped us to be excited on we are going to listen next. Here, the summary on what I went through for 8 days. How bored the topic it was but the general knowledge still can be gained form all those speakers. The clinical research information was good enough for me to realize that the career opportunity in particular study was available in Malaysia. Credit to CReST EvendZ (CE).

Technical Module Review Part I
Creativity and Innovation.
Invention and Business.
How loser I am compared to them, yes the speakers and Dr. Barjoyai Bardai is one of the people I impressed. My degree's scroll is slowly turning into a piece of blank paper, nothing to be proud of. Huh, is it like I did nothing for 3 years back or is it like I had work out for the ticket where I'm standing today. The terms of Intelligence Quotient (IQ), Spiritual Quotient (SQ), Creativity Quotient (CQ) and Emotional Quotient (EQ) were quite familiar to me but the Persistence Quotient (PQ) term was introduced by him in the creativity session. I do realized all new ideas are wrong ideas since anything logical or good was not new ideas. Then, one of the life's philosophy is to accept all the wrong ideas in order to be creative. It depends either to make the familiar strange or to make strange familiar.
The creativity which is juxtaposition of ideas was means nothing with no innovation since the innovation can be described as the current actions to solve the future problems or simply said, to make new idea workable. The process to bring new ideas into life was by reducing concepts to practices. The innovation itself is influenced by logical thinking as well as customer judgement. Nevertheless, ego is controlling our thinking and in order to screen our new ideas, the ego should be controlled. The highlights of the session: Six Hats (+ 1: Grey Hat) Thinkings, Doodling, Strategic Canvas and Break-even Analysis.
Invention and Business.
First and foremost, we need to force the relationship in order to produce a product since an invention is a conversion of knowledge into money. The invention can be classified either important or interesting. Thus, for the invention to become an innovation it must succeed in the marketplace. The entrepreneurs will spend time and effort not money since they need to think smart to cut the variable cost in business. The highlights of the session: S-curves, NABC Framework, Elevator Pitch and 7 Sources of Business Ideas. The case study was Nothing Unique to Offer. Yeah, credit to Dr. Roland Xavier for the awesome session.

Communication Module Review Part II
Powerful Presentation Skills.
And I was so nervous I couldn’t talk – not a word. My voice shook and my hands shook and I was barely able to apologize. I was paralyzed. After about 5 minutes, they let me leave. Still to this day, I am embarrassed when I think about it. A group of 5 women sitting around a table, a topic I knew inside and out, and I was struck dumb-(Gottlieb, 2004).
How to keep your audience interested :
-eye contact
-body language
-show you are happy to be there
-move around/avoid using podium
-show your audience what you tell them
-if using flip charts, use two
-present info instead of reading notes
-use visual aids
-vary your activities and modes
-get audience involved
-be a good listener
-be yourself
p/s:when it comes to make the first impression, body language as well as appearance speaks much louder than words.
Business Proposals.
Frankly speaking, I have no idea on how to write a business proposal at first. Yes, the request for proposal (RFP) must come to be fulfilled. Writing to win and red teaming your proposal. The SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunity, threat) analysis could be done as a rocket pick presentation. The elevator pitch must be good enough in order to get the golden nugget.
Effective Resume & Cover Letter.
There are about 45 seconds for the interviewee to look through your resume. So, use the resume to market yourself for the employment.
p/s:knowing what you can do is one thing, knowing what you want is another.
Conducting Effective Meeting.
The topic reference:
Lawton, P., Rigby, E. R., & Hall, L. (1985), Meetings – Their Law and Practice, London:
MacDonald and Evans. Should I spend for the book, lol? By the way, secretary is a person who are standing in the corridor of the power due to the most resourceful person in the meeting and for sure the company secretary is difference from the personal secretary in terms of their duty scope.
The Art of Public Speaking.
Listen carefully and quickly think if you want to be a good public speaker. Thanks a lot Mr. Hisham Karim and Miss Hanani Ahmad for the briefing.

Communication Concept and Skills.
And lower your voice. Verily, the harshest of all voices is the voice (braying) of the bass-Surah Luqman:19.
The barriers:
-slang
-difficult languages
-tone and expression
-voice
-gender/status

Introduction to Communication.
Communication is the art of transmitting information, ideas, and attitudes from one person to another. The communication process is including 30% of speaking, 45% of listening, 9% of writing and 16% of reading.
“We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.”- Epictetus

“The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”- George Bernard
Industrial Visit-Inno Bio, Nilai + Stellagen
Inno Bio Ventures Sdn. Bhd. was established in 2002 and structured with Inno Biologics Sdn. Bhd. (IBL), Inno Bio Diagnostics Sdn. Bhd. (IBD) and Bio Innovation Centre Sdn. Bhd. (BIC). The IBL is a contract manufacturing organization specializing in bio-manufacturing of mammalian cell culture-based biopharmaceuticals. The IBD is a centre of excellence for Research and Development (R&D) and commercialization of stem cell technology such as diagnostics, therapy and regenerative medicine. Moreover, the BIC is an ideal incubator for new and established biotechnology companies engaged in bio-manufacturing activities. The company has pioneered the state-of-the-art current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) facility for the production of biopharmaceuticals especially in mammalian cell culture technology. The chairman is Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Ahmad Zaharudin Idrus.
In addition, the company managed to handle three to six months internship for students in collaborating with a local higher learning education institutions as well as international institutions such as from London and Germany. Their strategic partnerships are Boehringer Ingelheim, Cuba’s Centre for Molecular Immunology (CIMAB S.A.), GE Healthcare, Kuala Lumpur Sports Centre and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Medical Centre. The company’s business was more on providing the services such as contract research, training, antibody development, humanization services, cell-line development (cell differentiation and characterization), cloning and verification of gene expression, protein expression, yield improvement, cell banking, process science (screening and optimization) and cGMP bio-manufacturing, product development (upstream to downstream operation), analytics and scaled up from non-cGMP to cGMP with a streamlined scale-up work and transient process transfer to manufacturing scale.
On the other hand, Stellagen Sdn. Bhd. was offering their first product, StellarLacTM. The product is a feed supplement for poultry that has undergone a 12 years research in University Putra Malaysia (UPM). It is known as probiotic since the product is consisted of multi-strain friendly bacteria in order to keep the chickens healthy, free from disease and low in fat as well as cholesterol. The probiotic can be widely used to replace the antibiotics which commonly used for the chicken before. In short, Inno Bio has provided the services for biotechnology research and manufacturing meanwhile Stellagen has provided one of the best local biotechnology products. The research conducted at Stellagen was on the microbes and the effectiveness of usage to the poultry but Inno Bio’s research was on mammalian cells for the diagnosis purpose and scale-up process.
Both companies should have the structured plan in order to penetrate the market more effectively either local or international. For example, the growth phase for the next 20 years is needed to be well planned for the company sustainability since the biotechnology related companies have got the backed up from the government in terms of financial and moral support. The market survey can be conducted at some area based on the market’s demand, then followed by wide promotions on the products or services. The continuous collaboration with experienced organizations and institutions can help the companies in term of improving the quality as well as quantity of the products. Plus, the good services that have been offered by the companies must be fully contributed to the nation and global economic growth. The flexibility and good quality of work can be sustained to provide the world standard facilities since Malaysia is towards the innovation-led country. From my point of view, the companies should carry on their business by offering both, good quality services and high quality products. The feedbacks from the customers and consumers also must be considered to improve the business flow and productivity.
The businesses which are related to the biotechnology industry are the great opportunity to be taken not only for the personal benefits but to maintain as well as improving the human being performance. Hence, Inno Bio Ventures Sdn. Bhd. and Stellagen Sdn. Bhd. are the examples of the local biotechnology related companies which on the right path in leading the innovation. The achievements in research and development should not be limited to the local but the good impacts can be spread and shared to whole over the world.
p/s:the visit was awesome, thanks guys

You Get Back What You Give
When I learn to respect myself, other people will respect me. How can I develop respect for myself? By keeping my mind positive and encouraging myself to grow and change for the better. Demanding respect because of my position or background is simply arrogance. On the other hand, listening with humility and valuing other people's advice naturally earns me respect. I get back exactly what I give out - Brahma Kumaris, Mt Abu.

A Very Happy New Year 2011
As time goes by so fast, somehow we can't really count into it. We do arrange but still, Allah the one and only managed to arrange. I didn't make a new year's resolution this year because I hadn't be able to keep to it. Is it follow the flow is one of the best to stick on without any resolutions? It was almost one quarter of a century I've been here but still have many things to play with achieve before get into the here after.
Tired and bored, is it the best to describe our daily routine. Stress, it is worst enough???
For the new year, lets push your brain to work on this...just try to get both ya!
So, what does the dancer say about you? Or is it the solution...
