Inno Bio Ventures Sdn. Bhd. was established in 2002 and structured with Inno Biologics Sdn. Bhd. (IBL), Inno Bio Diagnostics Sdn. Bhd. (IBD) and Bio Innovation Centre Sdn. Bhd. (BIC). The IBL is a contract manufacturing organization specializing in bio-manufacturing of mammalian cell culture-based biopharmaceuticals. The IBD is a centre of excellence for Research and Development (R&D) and commercialization of stem cell technology such as diagnostics, therapy and regenerative medicine. Moreover, the BIC is an ideal incubator for new and established biotechnology companies engaged in bio-manufacturing activities. The company has pioneered the state-of-the-art current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) facility for the production of biopharmaceuticals especially in mammalian cell culture technology. The chairman is Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Ahmad Zaharudin Idrus.
In addition, the company managed to handle three to six months internship for students in collaborating with a local higher learning education institutions as well as international institutions such as from London and Germany. Their strategic partnerships are Boehringer Ingelheim, Cuba’s Centre for Molecular Immunology (CIMAB S.A.), GE Healthcare, Kuala Lumpur Sports Centre and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Medical Centre. The company’s business was more on providing the services such as contract research, training, antibody development, humanization services, cell-line development (cell differentiation and characterization), cloning and verification of gene expression, protein expression, yield improvement, cell banking, process science (screening and optimization) and cGMP bio-manufacturing, product development (upstream to downstream operation), analytics and scaled up from non-cGMP to cGMP with a streamlined scale-up work and transient process transfer to manufacturing scale.
On the other hand, Stellagen Sdn. Bhd. was offering their first product, StellarLacTM. The product is a feed supplement for poultry that has undergone a 12 years research in University Putra Malaysia (UPM). It is known as probiotic since the product is consisted of multi-strain friendly bacteria in order to keep the chickens healthy, free from disease and low in fat as well as cholesterol. The probiotic can be widely used to replace the antibiotics which commonly used for the chicken before. In short, Inno Bio has provided the services for biotechnology research and manufacturing meanwhile Stellagen has provided one of the best local biotechnology products. The research conducted at Stellagen was on the microbes and the effectiveness of usage to the poultry but Inno Bio’s research was on mammalian cells for the diagnosis purpose and scale-up process.
Both companies should have the structured plan in order to penetrate the market more effectively either local or international. For example, the growth phase for the next 20 years is needed to be well planned for the company sustainability since the biotechnology related companies have got the backed up from the government in terms of financial and moral support. The market survey can be conducted at some area based on the market’s demand, then followed by wide promotions on the products or services. The continuous collaboration with experienced organizations and institutions can help the companies in term of improving the quality as well as quantity of the products. Plus, the good services that have been offered by the companies must be fully contributed to the nation and global economic growth. The flexibility and good quality of work can be sustained to provide the world standard facilities since Malaysia is towards the innovation-led country. From my point of view, the companies should carry on their business by offering both, good quality services and high quality products. The feedbacks from the customers and consumers also must be considered to improve the business flow and productivity.
The businesses which are related to the biotechnology industry are the great opportunity to be taken not only for the personal benefits but to maintain as well as improving the human being performance. Hence, Inno Bio Ventures Sdn. Bhd. and Stellagen Sdn. Bhd. are the examples of the local biotechnology related companies which on the right path in leading the innovation. The achievements in research and development should not be limited to the local but the good impacts can be spread and shared to whole over the world.
